John Lennon has long gotten his way, starting with his first band, a group called the Quarrymen. From his mid-teens into his thirties, the singer did as he pleased. In his first marriage, he conducted a series of affairs. In his professional life, he wrote scores of songs on his own. But John Lennon has never been independent. There has always been a Paul McCartney or a Yoko Ono to rein him in when he became outlandish.
Not anymore. Beginning in the summer of 1973, John and Yoko are done. Lennon and May Pang are now a couple. The singer leaves for Los Angeles in October to promote Mind Games. The breakup with Ono is now public. Being a Beatle has long meant that every relationship a band member indulged in has been followed by the press. It was this way with McCartney and his girlfriend Jane Asher, soon after replaced by Linda Eastman. Now the media are running wild with the May Pang story. The coupleâs ten-year age difference is not an issue. As the couple makes the rounds in LA, Lennonâs Lost Weekend becomes a time of drugs, sex, and rock ânâ roll. Their every move is scrutinized by the tabloids, with Yoko keeping tabs back home in New York, later claiming that John called her every night to check in.
The situation in Los Angeles quickly deteriorates. Nine months into his separation from Yoko, Lennon is spotted at the Troubadour, a nightclub on Santa Monica Boulevard. He is there to see soul singer Ann Peebles. Yet the former Beatle becomes so drunk that he wanders through the audience with a sanitary napkin attached to his forehead, ignoring the singer he came to see.
As Lennon departs, a waitress heckles him for leaving a poor tip.
âDo you know who I am?â he demands.
âYeah,â says the waitress. âYouâre some asshole with a Kotex on your head.â
